Guided by Grace: My Chess Journey

The article below is a personal reflection by Year 6 student Joshua W, exploring the lessons he has gained through chess and faith.

Chess has become more than just a game to me; it’s been a journey that has strengthened my strategic thinking, perseverance, and discipline. I believe that the abilities and opportunities I have experienced in chess are gifts from God, and through His grace, I’ve grown both as a player and as a person. What started as simple curiosity gradually developed into a deep passion that continues to challenge and shape me, both on and off the chessboard.

When I first received my Queensland Junior chess rating in January 2025, it was 553. Over the course of a year, through dedication, practice, and by God’s grace, my rating improved to 1087 by January 2026. To sharpen my understanding of the game, I watched instructional videos, studied different openings and tactical patterns, and practiced consistently by playing countless online games. I also participated in numerous tournaments, which pushed me to compete against stronger players and develop greater focus and resilience.

While winning is always satisfying, I have learned that losing often brings the most valuable lessons. Every loss reveals weaknesses in my thinking and gives me the opportunity to reflect, analyze, and improve. Instead of being discouraged by defeat, I try to view it as part of God’s process of shaping my perseverance and humility. Through this mindset, each setback becomes a stepping stone toward growth.

My interest in chess began when I noticed a tournament taking place in the college hall. I was fascinated instantly by the elegance of the pieces, the quiet concentration of the players, and the depth of the game. That moment sparked my curiosity and motivated me to learn more. Looking back, I believe that God used that simple moment to lead me toward a passion that’s still shaping me today. My first tournament was at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ÍøÕ¾, where I competed in the C division.

As I continued to play and improve, I began to achieve stronger results. By the third interschool tournament, I advanced from the C division to the premier team. In that event, I scored 6 out of 7 games, helping our team secure third place and qualify for the interschool state finals. That achievement meant a lot to me because it showed how consistency in effort really does bring growth.

Some of my most memorable games were the ones where I seemed completely lost. Yet, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I found unexpected moves and managed to defeat my opponents. These experiences reminded me that perseverance and faith can make a difference even when situations seem impossible.

More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Singapore and Canberra to compete in international and interstate tournaments. Facing strong opponents from different places was both challenging and inspiring, pushing me to think more deeply and adapt my strategies. During these events, I received my first classical FIDE rating of 1680- another milestone I’m truly thankful for. I see these experiences as blessings from God, shaping not only my chess skills but also my character.

Through this journey, I have learned that real progress requires discipline, reflection, and a balance between study, analysis, and competition. More than anything, chess has taught me patience, resilience, and humility. I hope to continue using the gifts God has given me faithfully. As I move forward, my goal is not only to improve as a player but also to help build a chess community at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ÍøÕ¾. My hope is for it to be a space where players share their love for the game, build friendship and encourage one another in both victory and defeat. Through God’s grace, I look forward to continuing this path of learning, growth, and dedication.
